Final 2012 Update
“These past two weeks in Health and Wellness, I attended an informational meeting on the smoking cessation efforts on ASU’s campus hosted by the Maricopa County Department of Public Health and the Health and Counseling Student Action Committee. I also coordinated PR support for the university’s participation in the Great American Smokeout, which took place on Hayden Lawn on November 15, the same day which ASU announced its upcoming tobacco ban. Additionally, I registered to be trained as a smoking cessation mentor with the American Lung Association to better support the university’s initiative.
I also fulfilled USG’s commitment to the Panhellenic Council and USG wellness initiative for this semester by distributing safety whistles attached to keytags with information on Safety Escort and ASUPD. I handed out approximately 30 of these items to students sitting outside the Memorial Union, and answered questions about safety programs available to them.
Lastly, I placed orders for One Glove shirts, and coordinated the free STI testing offered by ASU’s Health Services that will be available on November 28th in commemoration of World AIDS Day.”

“This week in Health & Wellness I attended meetings for I Always Get Consent, World AIDS Day, Devils in the Bedroom, and the Farmers Market. During these meetings, we collaborated on ways USG can contribute to programing and goals these organizations have set for themselves. In particular, we are working on a partnership with Devils in the Bedroom, RHA, and MU After Dark to put together an event to promote safe sex and condom-usage. Additionally, we have also begun working with the World AIDS Day committee to distribute One Glove shirts in addition to support the other World AIDS Day activities that will be found on Hayden Lawn on November 28th. Lastly, we solidified plans to support ASU Wellness’s Consensual Lemonade Stand on September 27th, a passive event designed to raise awareness about sexual assault. Please stop by Hayden Lawn from 10am-1pm to learn more about sexual violence prevention efforts at ASU and enjoy some refreshing lemonade!”

“This week in Health and Wellness I held a campus-wide Health and Wellness Forum with representatives from various health-related organizations including ONEshot ASU, HIV/AIDS Awareness Club, Real Food ASU, and many others. During this meeting we discussed each organization’s goals for the semester and how USG can contribute to the achievement of these goals. We assembled a programming calendars and set up “break-out” meetings around a variety of issues to continue more focused collaboration. Among these break-out committees are World AIDS Day, World Food Day, and Wellness Wednesdays (an on-going program run by the Well Devil Council that encourages involvement from other clubs).”
Week of September 3rd, 2012
This week in Health and Wellness I began the preliminary plans for a Health and Wellness forum with all health-related student organizations in which representatives are invited to discuss partnerships with one another and the ways in which USG can enhance and contribute to their current organizational goals. This forum will be held Wednesday September 12 at 5pm (location TBD) and delegates from Devils in the Bedroom, One Shot ASU, and other health clubs will discuss their upcoming programing and plans in an open discourse.
I also met with representatives from ASU Wellness to discuss our plans for RAINN (Rape Abuse and Incest National Network) Day on September 28th, as well as plans for ASU’s recognition of World AIDS Day at the end of November. We have plans to continue USG’s One Glove event, one of Health and Wellness’s most popular programs, in which t-shirts, condoms, and vouchers for STI testing are distributed to students to encourage safe sex.
Lastly, I compiled a calendar of health awareness holidays and observance days around which to begin planning future programing, including World Hunger Day in October and Alcohol Awareness Week in April. These dates will also be discussed with the student organizations at the Health and Wellness Forum.
